The Four C's
Chances are you’re familiar with the four Cs: carat, cut, clarity and color, used to grade diamonds and determine a stone’s value. These four characteristics are used by gemologists and appraisers to evaluate the quality of a diamond and determine its value. When considering a diamond, it is important to balance the Four Cs, taking into account personal preferences, budget, and the overall look of the piece.
Carat
A diamond's weight is measured in carats, with one carat equaling 0.2 grams. The carat weight of a diamond affects its size and price, with larger diamonds being more valuable.
Cut
A diamond's cut refers to its shape, proportions, and symmetry, and how well it has been cut to bring out its natural brilliance and sparkle. A well-cut diamond will reflect light better and appear brighter and more brilliant than a poorly cut diamond.
Clarity
A diamond's clarity refers to the presence of internal and external blemishes or inclusions. The fewer and smaller the inclusions, the more valuable the diamond. Clarity is rated on a scale from "Included" (I1) to "Flawless" (FL).
Color
A diamond's color is judged on a scale from "D" (colorless) to "Z" (light yellow or brown). The more colorless a diamond is, the more valuable it is. A completely colorless diamond is rare and highly sought after.
